Pinterest GIF Downloader: Save Animated Pins, Not Frozen Stills

Written and maintained by the SaverPin team · Last updated September 25, 2026

Save the moving version of an animated Pinterest Pin, not the single still frame your browser keeps. Paste the Pin link and get the original .gif when Pinterest has one, or the looping MP4 it plays in the feed.

Works with direct Pinterest Pin links and pin.it short links. Open the individual Pin before copying its link for the best result.

Download Pinterest GIFs Online

Our Pinterest GIF downloader saves the moving version of an animated Pin, not the frozen still your browser grabs when you right-click it. Paste the Pin link, and the tool looks for the animated file behind it.

When the Pin still has an original .gif file, you get that. When Pinterest only keeps the animation as a short, silent, looping MP4, you get the MP4 instead, and the tool tells you so.

It runs in a browser on your phone, tablet, or computer, with no app or extension to install.

For a Pinterest GIF link download, always use the URL of the individual Pin. A board or profile link does not identify the animation you want.

How to Download a GIF from Pinterest

Saving an animated Pin takes only a few steps. You need the link to the individual Pin and a browser.

  1. 1

    Open the animated Pin

Open the Pin with the GIF you want to save, on the Pinterest app or website.

  2. 2

    Copy the link

Tap the share icon (or the three-dot menu) and choose Copy Link.

  3. 3

Paste it into the box above

Paste the link into the box at the top of this page.

  4. 4

    Let it check the Pin

Wait a few seconds while the tool looks for the animated file behind the Pin.

  5. 5

    Download the GIF or MP4

Tap Download to save the original .gif, or the looping MP4 if that is the version the Pin has.

1. Find the Animated Pin

Open Pinterest and find the GIF you want to save. Open the individual Pin so it fills the screen before copying anything.

Animated Pins usually play on their own in the feed. If the Pin shows a play button and has sound, it is more likely a Video Pin, which the video downloader on our homepage handles.

2. Copy the Pin Link

Open the Pin's sharing options and select Copy link. Pinterest gives you a pinterest.com URL or a short pin.it link that identifies that specific Pin.

3. Paste the Link

Return to the downloader and paste the copied URL into the input box at the top of this page.

4. Let the Tool Check the Pin

The tool reads the public Pin page and collects the media files Pinterest's CDN serves for it. On this page, it filters the results down to GIF files.

If the Pin has no .gif file, you will see a short note saying so, followed by everything the tool did find, which is usually the MP4 version of the animation.

5. Save the Animation

Tap the file you want to download. Your browser saves it to its usual download location.

If a .gif opens and plays in a new tab instead of downloading, use your browser's save or share option on that tab to keep the file.

What Pinterest Links Does Our GIF Downloader Support?

The downloader works with links that point to one individual Pin. Use the Pin's own URL whenever you can.

Direct Pinterest Pin Links

A direct Pin link, such as pinterest.com/pin/ followed by a number, points to one specific post. That gives the tool a clear target.

Short pin.it Links

The Pinterest app often shares Pins as short pin.it links. Paste the short link as it is; the tool follows it to the full Pin before processing.

Links That Are Not Supported

Some Pinterest URLs do not point to a single animation, so the tool cannot tell which GIF you mean.

  • Board URLs point to a collection of Pins.
  • Profile URLs point to a user's account.
  • Search and Explore URLs show a page of results.
  • Links to secret boards or private Pins are not publicly reachable.
  • Incomplete or mistyped URLs do not contain enough information to find the Pin.

Why Does My Pinterest GIF Download as a Still Image?

Because the animation you see in the Pinterest feed is often not a .gif file at all. Pinterest commonly plays animated Pins as a short, silent, looping MP4 video, with a still poster frame shown while it loads. When you right-click and save, or take a screenshot, you capture that poster frame, so you end up with a frozen still instead of the moving GIF.

Pinterest may still call the post a GIF in the interface. That label describes how the Pin looks in the feed, not the file format Pinterest actually delivers.

What Right-Click Save Actually Grabs

Your browser saves the image element it is showing. For an animated Pin, that element is usually the poster frame: a single JPG or WebP picture of the first frame, placed in front of the video player.

The motion lives in a separate video stream, which the right-click Save Image option never touches. The result is a static picture with the right file name but none of the animation.

Why a Screenshot Does Not Help

A screenshot records exactly one frame at your screen's resolution. It cannot capture movement, and it often picks up buttons, captions, or other interface elements around the Pin.

What Our GIF Downloader Does Differently

Instead of saving what is drawn on screen, the tool reads the Pin's page data and lists the media files behind it. If an original .gif exists, it is offered first on this page. If the animation only exists as MP4, the tool offers the MP4, which keeps every frame and loops in any video player.

We do not convert between formats. You get the file Pinterest's CDN actually serves, unchanged.

GIF or MP4: Which Should You Download?

Pick MP4 when you want the smallest file that plays in editors, apps, and video players. Pick GIF when you need something that autoplays and loops on its own in places that do not show video players, such as some chat apps, forums, and email signatures.

Why GIF Files Are Usually Much Larger

The GIF format stores each frame as its own compressed picture, limited to a palette of 256 colors. It has none of the motion-based, inter-frame compression that modern video codecs use, where most frames only store what changed since the previous one.

As a result, a GIF is often several times larger than an MP4 of the same animation at the same size and length, and the colors can look banded.

When MP4 Is the Better Choice

MP4 keeps full color, stays small, and opens in almost every video editor, presentation tool, and phone gallery. If you plan to edit the clip, add it to a video, or just keep it, MP4 is usually the better file.

An MP4 from an animated Pin has no audio track, because the source animation never had one.

When a Real GIF Is the Better Choice

A .gif file plays as an image rather than as video. That is useful where a video would show a play button, not play at all, or be blocked, such as some forums, email signatures, and older chat tools.

Which One Will I Get From This Tool?

It depends on the Pin. When Pinterest still has the original .gif, the tool lists it. When the animation only exists as a looping MP4, you get the MP4. The tool does not create a GIF from an MP4. If you need a GIF and only an MP4 is available, a separate video-to-GIF converter can make one from the file you download.

Download Pinterest GIFs on Any Device

The downloader works in the browser you already have. The steps are the same everywhere; only the place the file lands changes.

Pinterest GIF Downloader for Android

Copy the Pin link from the Pinterest app, open this page in Chrome or another browser, paste the link, and download the file.

The file goes to your Downloads folder. Some gallery apps show only the first frame of a GIF as a thumbnail; open the file to see it play.

Pinterest GIF Downloader for iPhone and iPad

Copy the Pin link from the Pinterest app, paste it here in Safari, and download the file. Safari saves it to the Downloads folder in the Files app by default.

To move a GIF or MP4 into Photos, open it in Files, tap the share icon, and choose Save Image or Save Video.

Pinterest GIF Downloader for Windows and Mac

Copy the Pin URL from the address bar, paste it into the downloader, and save the file. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all save to the Downloads folder unless you have chosen another location.

What Kind of Animated Content Can You Download?

Motion on Pinterest comes in a few different forms. Each one is stored differently, so each one fits a different tool:

Pinterest contentBest tool
Animated GIF PinsThis GIF downloader
Animations inside an Idea Pin or story PinThe Pinterest Story Downloader
Video Pins and short-form video with soundThe Pinterest Video Downloader on our homepage
Carousel Pins (several images in one Pin)The Pinterest Carousel Downloader
Board covers and profile picturesNot supported

If you paste the wrong kind of Pin here, nothing is lost: when a Pin has no GIF, the tool shows whatever media it did find, so you can still download it or switch to the matching tool.

Why Isn't My Pinterest GIF Downloading?

Most problems come from the link, the Pin itself, or how your browser handles the file.

You Copied a Board or Profile Link

Open the individual animated Pin, then copy its link from the share menu. Board and profile URLs do not point to one animation.

The Tool Says the Pin Has No GIF Media

This means Pinterest does not expose a .gif file for that Pin, usually because it keeps the animation only as MP4. The tool then lists the files it did find. Download the MP4; it contains the same animation.

The Pin Is Not Actually Animated

Some Pins only look animated because of a cinemagraph-style preview or a video with sound. If the tool finds only still images, the Pin has no animation to save. If it finds a video with audio, the video downloader on our homepage is the better fit.

The GIF Plays in a New Tab Instead of Downloading

Some browsers open .gif files instead of saving them. On a computer, right-click the playing GIF and choose Save Image As. On a phone, long-press it or use the share icon.

The Saved GIF Looks Frozen

Check where you are viewing it. Many file managers and gallery thumbnails show only the first frame. Open the file in a browser or a viewer that supports animation to confirm it moves.

The Pin Is Private or Removed

Pins on secret boards, and Pins the creator has deleted, are not publicly reachable. The tool cannot access them, and it will never try to get around Pinterest's privacy settings.

Where Are Downloaded Pinterest GIFs Saved?

Your browser decides where downloads go. Unless you changed its settings, look in these places:

Android

Open your browser's download list, or the Downloads folder in your file manager. Some gallery apps also list GIFs and videos from the Downloads folder.

iPhone and iPad

Check Files, then Downloads. Use the share sheet's Save Image or Save Video option to add the file to Photos, where GIFs appear in the Animated album.

Windows and Mac

Open the Downloads folder in File Explorer or Finder. If you changed the browser's download location, check that folder instead.

Do You Need Pinterest to Download a GIF?

You only need the link to a public Pin. The downloader does not use your Pinterest account.

Do You Need a Pinterest Account?

No. You never sign in, and we never ask for a Pinterest account, email address, or login. If you can copy a public Pin's link, you can paste it here.

Do You Need the Pinterest App?

No. You can copy Pin links from the Pinterest website in any browser. The app is only a convenient way to find and share the link.

Is Pinterest GIF Downloader Safe?

The tool only needs the Pin link. It never needs your password, an extension, or any software on your device.

Do You Need to Enter Your Pinterest Password?

No. We never ask for Pinterest credentials. Be wary of any downloader that does.

Are Downloaded GIFs Stored on Our Servers?

No. When you submit a Pin, our server requests that public page just long enough to find the media it contains. The file is fetched from Pinterest's CDN when you download it and streamed straight to your device, not written to disk or a database.

We do not keep a record of your download history.

What Information Does the Website Collect?

We store your light or dark theme preference in your browser's local storage, and that value never leaves your device. Our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs (IP address, timestamp, error traces) for security and debugging, which rotate automatically and are not used for profiling or advertising. Our Privacy Policy has the full details.

Does the Tool Install Anything?

No. Everything happens in your browser. If a site asks you to install an app or extension just to save a GIF, treat that as a warning sign.

Is It Legal to Download Pinterest GIFs?

Downloading a GIF and having permission to reuse it are separate questions. The person who made an animation usually owns its copyright, and a public Pin does not grant everyone the right to repost or sell it. Pinterest advises users to get permission from the copyright holder when needed.

Personal Use

Saving a GIF for your own reference, or to keep a copy of an animation you made yourself, is different from publishing someone else's work.

Reposting and Commercial Use

Before you repost a downloaded GIF on social media, use it in a product, or put it in an advertisement, check who created it and whether you have permission or a license that covers that use.

GIFs made from film, TV, or game footage can involve rights holders beyond the person who posted the Pin. For commercial projects, consider asking a qualified legal professional.
